Perk Up Cafe

About us

Since 2006 and then ‘further enhanced’ by Jeanette Footman and Alice Matsuo in 2009, Perk Up has been a well-known cafe in Broad Ripple for its specialty, fair trade organic (FTO) in-house roasted coffee, exceptional breads and cakes. With Jeanette having a strong affinity for baking German-style cakes, and Alice’s background as a chemist & German trained & certified artisan bread baker, the two joined forces to eventually create Brotgarten within Perk Up. Alice is a third generation Brazilian-Japanese who was born & raised in Brazil. She lived in Japan, Australia & Germany before arriving in 2008 in the United States. Alice holds a bachelor degree in chemistry and additionally went through a three year apprenticeship to become a German artisan baker. She completed the program in a whole grain organic bakery and received her final certificate Magna Cum Laude by the guilds Wuppertal-Solingen-Remscheid in August 2008.

Alice managed to put together her love for cooking, a strong knowledge in chemistry and her broad life experiences abroad to create a simple enthusiastic result: her passion for the art of bread baking & fascination for the science behind this craft.

Jeanette is a first generation Cameroonian-German, who was born & raised in East Berlin, Germany, but moved to West Berlin 12 years before the Berlin Wall came down. She went through a three year apprenticeship with one of the three largest insurance companies in the world. After that, she went to live in England for a year and a half. Upon her return to Berlin, she got rehired by the same insurance company and became an instructor. In 1995 she moved to the United States. Upon arrival here in Indianapolis it was nearly impossible to find the variety of delicious breads & pastries she was used to, so she started baking pastries for friends and family. They encouraged her to start her own cake business. In February 2008, she hosted her first ‘Kaffeeklatsch, a Sunday afternoon gathering, where she met Alice.

After their first meeting in October 2008, they decided to combine their passion for quality food to offer authentic German breads and pastries. They have been successfully serving the community with tasty breads and cakes for 15 years. Along with their signature vegetarian quiche, tasty breakfast sandwiches on Brotgarten bread, as well as a variety of other everyday pastries, they have extended their offerings to baked goods from their rich cultural upbringings and extensive travels. Perk Up has been dubbed a “Neighborhood Favorite” several years in a row by NextDoor Neighbor. They also have been covered in Edible Indy, North Indy Magazine, Indianapolis Monthly & have been on TV, radio and North Indy Podcast.
